Greyson Chance's "Football"

  • If you know me, you know how huge of a fan I am of Greyson Chance. And recently a new song of his, "Football," has surfaced.
  • At first, I was confused. What could "Football" mean? He's never seemed to be a fan of football.
  • But then it became clear to me:"Football" is a metaphor of his career.
  • The past eight months haven't been the best for his career. He's parted with a huge record label, lost many of his songs, and has lost many of his fans. When he was asked about his new music, he said it was much more personal.
  • Football is a fast paced and hard sport. The objective of the game is to get a touchdown. You're always planning your next move. You'll be tackled for every loss.
  • The music business is much like this. It's very hard to make it in the music industry as you must move fast with your career in order to rise to fame. A touchdown symbolizes the sign where you've made it. To some it's a nice shiny Billboard, Grammy, AMA, etc. award, to others it's a big fanbase and sold out shows in Madison Square Garden. You and your manager must always be ahead of the "game" and plan out where you'll be next.
  • The "tackled for every loss" part to me is the most true for him. In case some people haven't realized, the result of him and Interscope parting caused him to lose much of his music, since Interscope probably owned most of it. Think of that inspiration all gone.
  • The lyric "Bright lights turn up the night pass but I'm stuck here in the dark" are the most interesting and powerful to me. Singers like Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, Ryan Beaty, etc. are all rising fast. They're the "bright lights" and while they turn up the night, Greyson is left in the dark because of everything that has happened. "But I'll be there" makes me get excited. It's a hint at what's going to happen soon.
  • Here are the lyrics and what they mean in my opinion:
  • I’ve been playing football in my head-obviously he means that this whole thing is like football to him
  • I’ve been patiently waiting for this game to end-he's patiently waiting to finally get his break and make it big
  • I’ve been tackling it with my mind-since his loss with Interscope, his mind has gotten the best of him
  • I’ve been waiting for you to come around-this I love the most. He's talking about the fans here. He's waiting for us to finally realize what's going on. He's waiting for us to just stop and support him. To stay with him
  • I’ve been waiting for a, for a touchdown-back to the big break
  • Bright lights turn up the night,
  • But I’m stuck here in the dark
  • But I’ll be there-see above
  • Bright Lights passing me by
  • But I’m stuck here on the words "I’ll never leave ya"-he's waiting for the contract to finally end so he can get his break, but these stars keep rising.
  • And colors fly, colors fly, colors fly...-this part made me think the most. To me, it symbolizes all the arguments and disagreements that have happened in the past eight months. "Colors" I feel is a replacement for the word "words."
  • You and I, you and I, you and I
  • We’re forever young and wild-he's talking about the fans again.
  • Oh oh oh I’ve been trying to make it with my mind-he's been trying to think of a way to make it finally
  • Before this song came out, my dad and I would talk a lot about his career. My dad brought up very good points.
  • I think this song is promising us one thing, if anything, that there will be a light in this dark. That we need to keep waiting and he'll finally make it. He'll get his chance in the spotlight.
  • And we will be able to proudly say we've been there from the start.
